Electronic leak detection is an interesting procedure in that leak detection is not an exact science, rather a combination of skill, experience, and luck. Each one of those is indispensable. Slab Leak Repair and Detection Services in Montgomery

Electronic leak detectors work by amplifying the sounds within a certain frequency range that pressurized water leaks typically make. These leaks must be of sufficient turbulence and pressure to make a noise detectable to the instrument. However, water leak noises can occur in areas not necessarily where the leak occurs. An example might be where a 20 foot long pipe has water rushing through it until it gets to the end and leaks out of a small pinhole. If the area of the leak is buried within an area comprised of materials such as sand that tend to absorb the sound, locating the leak can be more involved and even sometimes not possible.

Even hard surfaces such as concrete floors can grip pipes penetrating up through them and transmit more noise through these big surfaces acting like a big speaker and produce a louder leak sound than where the leak is actually coming from. Also, some leaks are just too small to be detected.

Other things that can make leak detection more problematic are areas that are substantially saturated with water, which can muffle leak sounds. When this happens, sometimes additional procedures are necessary to continue to try to locate a leak source. This can include procedures where we impart a gas, such as air or carbon dioxide, into the suspect pipe or electronically tracing the pipe or both. We don’t necessarily perform these additional procedures unless warranted upon our extensive experience and findings. These and other diagnostic procedures would be at an additional cost.

Other factors which can render leak detection difficult or sometimes impossible is wood flooring which tends to absorb sound considerably, or thick carpet with padding. Because of all these variables and the inherent limitations to the best technology the profession has available, sometimes circumstances exist where cabinets, for example, are removed, also access ports or holes through the concrete or other floor must be made, and this may not be where the leak is. This doesn’t happen very often, but it is a possibility.
