How Long Does a Bathroom Repipe Take?

Repiping In older houses it is common to find old worn pipes that need to be replaced. Worn pipes may necessitate several different jobs. Repiping the bathroom is one of the common jobs necessitated by old worn out pipes.

When planning a bath repipe, it is helpful to take into account that several factors can influence how long it will take to repipe a bath. Repiping a bath room is a complicated process that typically requires removal and restoration of sections of sheet rock and wall frames to access the pipes as well as replacement of the water pipes. A critical factor that determines the amount of time required to repipe is whether the job is going to be done with metal (copper, iron, lead), rigid plastic pipes (PCV) or modern PXC plastic pipes. Also, the construction of the house may also effect the length of time needed to complete the job. Is the house on a slab, over a crawl space, or a basement can influence difficulty of the job and how long to fix it.

There are several advantages to PXC. It is cheaper to ship and much easier to install. It is flexible and can be shipped on a spool so it does not have to be cut to length be shipment. Because it is flexible PXC can make a 90 percent turn without the elbow sections that are required by sections of rigid plastic pipes or metal pipes. PXC resists erosion to acidic water which damages other types of pipe and it is much less susceptible to being damaged by freezing temperatures that can ruin other types of pipe. PEX also has the advantage of a high insulation factor that may lower the amount spent to heat and deliver hot water around the house. So PEX pipe can be cheaper to ship, install and use, and it can be installed in less time.

The job of repiping can take up to 4 to 6 weeks if it is part of a general remodeling of the bath with the replacement of the tub, shower, vanity and toilet. On the other hand, the job could be less time intensive if it is strictly a matter of replacing the pipes. Still every house is different and the layout of the house can cause major differences in the length of time it will take the plumbing company to repipe your bath. Some pipe companies claim to be able to do a complete repiping job in 3 days including, inspection and wall restoration.
